CT and traditional x-rays both produce images of internal body structures. The structures in conventional x-rays overlap. The ribs, for example, cover the lung and heart. Structures of medical concern are frequently obscured by other organs or bones in an x-ray, making diagnosis difficult. During CT imaging, an x-ray tube rotates around the patient, collecting multiple images from various angles. These images are saved in a computer, which analyses them to create a new image without the overlying structures. Radiologists and other physicians can use CT images to identify internal structures and see their shape, size, density, and texture.
