CT scans and traditional x-rays both generate images of internal body structures. Structures in traditional x-rays overlap. For example, the ribs protect the lung and heart. Structures of medical concern are frequently obscured in an x-ray by other organs or bones, making diagnosis difficult. An x-ray tube rotates around the patient during CT imaging, collecting multiple images from various angles. These images are saved in a computer, which analyses them to produce a new image devoid of the underlying structures. CT images can be used by radiologists and other physicians to identify internal structures and see their shape, size, density, and texture.
